Every Spring I am reminded of the expansive unfolding of life’s blueprint. Worlds condensed into compact nuts. Generations folded into barely visible grains.
I like to think about dispersal mechanisms: water, wind, animals and heat. How each curious seed pod is divinely designed to fulfill its job. They swell, bulge, split, tear and crack like hatchlings stumbling and unfurling. Climbing into summer to fulfill their ancient and urgent duty. Heroic agents of the future.
I aim to maintain a collaborative dialogue with my materials. Constrained by fire, charcoal, graphite, raw birch and mineral pigment, this limited palette results in a cohesive taxonomy of imaginary seed shapes.
Seedbank can remind us of what psychology and philosophy have repeated— that our thoughts are like potent seeds. When watered, they give shape to our lives. By paying close attention to our inner working soil, we can make choices that direct the course of our flourishing.
Deborah is a multidisciplinary artist, who especially enjoys collaborative creative projects. Her studio is in Mulmur, Ontario. She visits Georgian Bay every summer through generous invitations from friends. Her work is found in collections across Canada and in the US.
